Scientific Temperance Federation records 1883-1918

In 1880 the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) created a Dept. of Scientific Temperance Instruction, headed by Mary H. Hunt (1830-1906), to disseminate medical and social facts about alcohol. After Hunt's death, Cora F. Stoddard (1872-1936) continued the work through the Scientific Temperance Federation (STF) of Boston. Collection consists of correspondence and printed matter concerning temperance. Correspondence, 1883-1918, includes letters to Hunt and Stoddard relating to their activities on behalf of the WCTU and the STF. Also, one folder of printed temperance materials.

Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. It became global when the World W.C.T.U. was founded in 1883.
